18th August 2023 Astronomical Events Zero Shadow Day

Zero Shadow Day an Astronomical event in which there will be no shadow cast by the sun of any object at solar noon. This occurs only when the sun is at a specific position known as the “Zenith Position” or “Culmination Point”. This event is known as Zero shadow day due to the position of the sun and hence it affects the shadow cast by the sun later.

This event is observed every year and it was recorded on 7th of July 2022. That is previous year the occurrence of the zero shadow day is usually between the Tropic of cancer and Tropic of Capricorn.

Reason for “Zero shadow” condition is because Rays of sun fall directly over object so shadow cast exactly beneath and hence shadow cannot be seen further from object or anything rays fall upon. There is also one condition that exist as “No shadow day” and it occurs typically during two equinoxes :-

  • Vernal Equinox around march 20-21
  • Autonomal equinox around September 22-23
